The leachate collection sewers at the 125 acre Croton Point Landfill transport leachate to the public sewer system through a series of pumping stations, gravity sewers and forcemains. The system provides Westchester County with automatic leachate treatment at its Ossining wastewater treatment plant as opposed to labor intensive manual collection which included pumping the leachate into tanker trucks for off-site disposal.
The leachate collection system included the design of two new pumping stations, and the rehabilitation of an existing station. Duplex submersible pumping systems were selected, with pumps rated at 5.20 and 6.3 horsepower respectively at the three pumping stations. Polyethylene piping was used for its compatibility with the leachate characteristics.
